I use RG-58 and HDF-400. For short runs, it barely makes a
difference, you'll still get good results with RG-58 on 70cm, and for
portable use, I find RG-58 easier to work with. Plus, I've got heaps
of the stuff -- in a past life it used to pass ethernet frames.
On the home base I use 3m of HDF-400... not for the high fidelity, but
because the FT-897D I bought at the time used N-type connectors for 2m/
70cm. This length was N-type terminated and just lying around doing
nothing, so figured I'd put it to use, it was easier than lopping off
the BNC connector and wiring up an N-type, and it could only make
things better in terms of efficiency.
I also have some RG-213, but few connectors to suit it... the cable
was cut at some random point, and has PL-259 connectors, so I use this
for HF mainly, again, just out of convenience. One length is spare,
the other having some 2.5m long radials off it for my squid pole
antenna (which I use on 20m, 10m and 6m).
It'd be worth letting us know what your situation is (current or
proposed) however, since there's different cables suitable for
different occasions.
