Does anyone know what that almost "pearloid" finish is,
found on an
NC-183D, or the lighter shade on an NC-57B? Its not just a
color, it
seems to be a very lightly reflective finish. Its not a
hammertone, it
is a solid color. But it seems to have a depth thats
beyond just a
simple paint.
Any help would be appreciated!
THANK YOU for that information. I regularly restore
Nationals and
want to upgrade the level of paint finish. Will keep you
posted.
* * * Interesting, I looked closely at a National
loudspeaker cabinet, the finish appears to be very slightly
"dappled" with spots that are very slightly darker than the
overall gray. I never really noticed this before although I
realized that there was something "different" about the
National paint.

National used so many finishes... The NC-57 and the NC-183 and NC-173
seem to have a very light carmel pearloid tone, while the 183D has a
dark grey with the same deep pearl effect. The SW-54 is grey hammered.
My NC-240D has a simple grey wrinkle finish, but this may be a re-do.
If it is, it was a damn good paint job.
