Ah, Steve Lare, RRS's own Demosthenes....
Demosthenes? Demosthenes Lareos? Isn't that the ancient Greek who got
booted out of the Navy for gross misconduct? Seems he was using mirrors
to focus sunlight on the clothing of his fellow mariners, when the
scorched garments were removed, he could see how well they were endowed.
Then, he'd walk up to them with his unlit lantern and ask for a light.
Millennia later, the pick up phrase "Got a light, Sailor?" can still be
heard on waterfronts worldwide.
On a related note, the phrase "Larengitis" also appears in the ancient
Greek. It's named after the same sailor. He would develop severe throat
infections immediately after landing in a port. Every time. When his
Captain found out just HOW this was happening, he had 'σας φυσώ' Lareos
thrown off the ship. The word has been mutated into Laryngitis over the
centuries.
The Greeks have had an extremely difficult time trying to overcome the
foul reputation this pervert has bestowed on their navy and Sailors.
