Wealth redistribution is a side effect of democracy. If you make
more poor people they will vote themselves more benefits paid for by
higher taxes.

Why do they admit that they are failures so easily, and then resort to
theft from others?

Aristotle:"Most men are such slaves to passion they'd do better in the
hands of a more rational master." Politics is all about who the master
is, more rational or not.

Its not about what should happen, never has been. Machiavelli says that
when the middle class no longer feels it has an investment in the system
left, there's a revolution. Demagogues will arise from among them who
will seize aristocratic assets to gratify the instinct for revenge.
While revenge is sweet, its not nutritious, and they soon come to regret.

Jared Diamond shows how when the resource base is maxed, rather than
cutting back to buy time to look for alternatives, elites simply
increase exploitation of everyone else. This keeps the level of their
perks increasing, giving the illusion 'progress' continues. Until
somebody snaps and its time to drag the rich *******s out to be butchered.
