Constitution is vague and subject to contemporary interpretation

The actual intentions of the Founders, the specific meanings of their
words, and how they chose the language of the Constitution is found in
the Federalist Papers.
The clarity you seek, is there.
Well, no. The Federalist papers are the thoughts of only two of the
fifty some convention delegates (Jay wasn't even at Philadelphis)
And ignoring the fact that the authors of the Federalist Papers left
many meanings unaddressed, they are no help at all on any of the
subsequent amendments.
