Neither side has an interest in that. There's no political
leverage in it.

Like everything, politics is a continuum. Not so much a number
line extending to infinity in either direction, but more an
Einsteinian shell that curves back on itself. Go in any single
direction long enough, and you end up where you started. Go far
enough to the right, and you end up standing next to your brother on
the left. And vice versa.

The truth is, that the sniping from diametrically opposed
combatants is the simple result of neither side going far enough. So
that they come to a meeting.

In that instance, the demagoguery stops.

But, as I said, there's no political will for that. Because
there's no leverage in it.
