Arlington Seeks Ham Radio Operators:

Arlington -- In the town's continuing efforts to be prepared for all
emergencies, the Arlington Emergency Management Agency is currently seeking
amateur radio operators (ham radio) who would be willing to assist the town
during an emergency.

AITI Holds Amateur Radio Direction Finding Competition:

The Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei
Darussalam (AITI) recently organised an ¡®Amateur Radio Direction Finding
(ARDF) Competition 2012¡ä at Sungai Basong Recreational Park in Tutong
District. Two local amateur radio clubs ¨C the Brunei Darussalam Amateur
Radio Association (BDARA) and Persatuan Gemilang Daerah Tutong ¨C jointly
supported this event. The ARDF competition allowed participants to compete
and show their skills in amateur radio direction finding. It required the
skills of orienteering and navigating of radio direction finding in
locating hidden transmitters called ¡®beacons¡¯ or ¡®foxes¡¯ within an area
using the bearings of the transmitted signal in pedestrian mode. A total of
10 teams participated in the ARDF and every team consisted of three members
with at least one person in the team holding a valid amateur radio station
licence. The ARDF competition started at 7.45am and lasted for two hours.
During the competition, each team also displayed their capabilities in the
design of their homemade directional antennas.

NASA: Spike in Sun's Activity Produces Five Eruptions in 2 Days:

The Sun has been very active in the last week. NASA scientists say our star
flared up producing five major eruptions in two days that generated
spectacular northern lights displays over the weekend. NASA scientists say
the solar flares which burst from nearly all areas of the Sun occurred
between February 23 and 24, and came from "top, bottom, left and right
sides of the solar disk." According to NASA, four of the five flares
occurred within a time-span of 24 hours.

Former RAC President Earle Smith, VE6NM (SK):

Earle Smith, VE6NM, of Grand Prairie, Alberta -- who served as
President of the Radio Amateurs of Canada (RAC) from 2004-2007 --
passed away Friday, February 24. He was 81. An active radio amateur
since 1948, first licensed as VE1SA, Smith enjoyed meeting amateurs
from all over Canada and the world.

ARRL Publishes New Guidelines for 60 Meters:

Thanks to the FCC Report and Order issued November 18, 2011,
amateurs will enjoy a number of new privileges on the 60 meter band
beginning March 5, including a boost in effective radiated power
from 50 to 100 W, as well as the ability to use CW and certain
digital modes.
