Depending on your signal conditions, 20 - 30 feet of wire is more
than enough. This radio is sensitive enough that your problems are going
to be more signal overload than signal deficiency. So, too much wire
will create problems. In some areas, 20 feet can be too much.
Orientation of the wire is not important in most cases, but
experimentation will determine whether there is a benefit to any

A good earth ground will help to keep noise low. As will a well
filtered and bypassed power supply.

This is actually a pretty good radio. I had the Sangean badged model,
and enjoyed it immensely.
