Default Bridging an antenna connection with a coax

Hello all,
I have the need to install an internal GPS antenna but sometimes I need to use an external antenna. The two situations are mutually exclusive and are never on the same unit.
I was hoping to build a single board that can serve both situations by including a U.FL/MMX connection that can be used for both. When an external antenna is needed, the user will simple use a MMX/U.FL to SMA cable and will be able to attach an external antenna.
My problem is that internal antennas are mostly surface mount and are meant to be connected to the GPS unit by a copper strip. Would it be possible to break the connection with two MMX connectors and then use a coax cable to complete the connection. This way when an external antenna needs to be used, the internal coax can be removed and the MMX connector that is connected to the receiver can be used.

Thank you for your time and help.
