Bill Preen scanned for other ham radio operators on his digital setup. "I
think I got one from Switzerland," he said. Preen is a member of the
Suwannee Amateur Radio Club, a group of about 30 ham radio operators based
out of a club house off of North U.S. Highway 129. SARC has existed for
about eight years, Preen said. The club was founded by John Beaver, of
local trucking company Beaver Bulk, Inc. For about three or four years, it
has been meeting at the current club house on 9707 58th St, near U.S.
129. "It's a good hobby," Preen said. "It's a lot of fun." Preen got his
start as a ham radio operator in high school in 1958, he said, when a man
on his paper route introduced him to the pastime. "You find interesting
people to talk to," he said, explaining why it appealed to him.
