URGENT MESSAGE RE THIS SATURDAY (TOMORROW!):
Members may be aware that some months ago, the National Trust were
approached by the National Grid, enquiring whether use could be made of an
ex-R&D 75m research pylon. The National Trust were apparently pre-selected
due to their access to relatively remote areas and charitable
status. Â*However they need to share use with other members of the public to
qualify for selection. Â*The National Trust have since contacted VARC to see
if we could make joint use of the pylon if we agree to housing the pylon at
our antenna site on Dunstable Downs. Â*Planning permission here is not seen
as an issue do to the proximity of other pylons in the almost immediate
area.
A major advantage to us is the Sly-Glide system which transports antennas
and connected feeders (total up to 1,416kg) by a sliding platform running
up a pylon leg. The Sly-Glide system is a recently proven technique and has
been primarily designed for mounting cell sites and associated feeders plus
for the inspection of pylons by camera.
The National Trust planÂ*to use the platform for remote-mount cameras and
TSRIFA-RADAR for research on soaring birds. Â*These birds are increasing
their population in the area and we understandÂ*that they use the same lift
wave as used by the local gliding club.
I am sure that members would agree that such a facility, free of charge,
would be of great benefit to our activities and therefore a quorum of the
VARC Committee have given the go-ahead.
The pylon is due for delivery at the site THIS WEEKEND TOMORROW Saturday.
Although the site will be restricted during the early hours delivery, a
small number of VARC members are welcome to see the assembly of the pylon
and demonstration of the Sly-Glide system at mid-day. Â*Please
urgently should you wish to be
added to the registration list for permitted visitors stating why you would
like to attend.
For any further information, please contact Peter on 01042016041. Â*Please
check the publication date of this message before planning your journey!
