Roger That! Mathachan Ashan Keeps Ham Radio Buzzing:

IDUKKI: When connectivity is no longer a barrier in this digital age, does
using wireless telegraphy for communication make any rational sense?
Apparently Yes! Mathachan Ashan, the first ham radio licensee in the
district, is operating it successfully, especially at times of natural
calamities. For Septuagenarian, Puthanpurayil P M Mathew, better known as
Mathachan Ashan among his dear and near ones at Ambalakkavala in Kattappana
here, ham radio is not just a means of communication, but an integral part
of his life. It was in 1982 that he bagged the licence for running a ham
radio for the first time in the history of Idukki. He later upgraded his
license to first grade in 1995. The Central Ministry of Communication and
Information Technology's Wireless and Planning and Coordination wing is the
authority that provides ham radio licences. Hams have to pass a test
consisting of three papers on rules and regulations on ham radio,
fundamental theory of radio, and morse code. Now, around 50 hams are there
in the district alone.

Doller's Radio has Been Tuned Into Anaheim Since 1931:

Doller's Radio has called downtown Anaheim home since 1931. The beige,
one-story, stucco building stands out on Anaheim Boulevard between the
rapidly rising condo developments, luxury apartments and popular Anaheim
Packing District. Dan Doller, 77, took over the family business from his
father, Warren Doller, in 1971. He spends his days thriving as a master
craftsman in the art of antique radio repair -- nothing after 1969, please.
Always with a styrene cup of coffee from nearby Jack's in-hand, he greets
customers with an easy smile and infectious enthusiasm for bygone
technology. Radio components hang from the rafters. Horn speakers -- think
of the style from the iconic RCA dog advertisements -- stand over towering
stacks of technical manuals and catalogs. A warm lamp glow illuminates
Doller's workbench, which sits in the center of the room. Despite Doller's
Radio's worn outward appearance, it is a place where craftsmanship and
beauty are valued. And that has helped the business' staying power. "If you
live in Anaheim and love old radios then you know the store because we've
taken good care of you over the years," Doller said. "When you do good
work, take care of people and love what you do, then people notice and a
business can survive no matter what the economy does." Doller's customers
come from all walks: serious collectors to flea market shoppers who've
picked up a cool-looking cabinet. He also meets a lot of people who have
inherited radios from their parents and want to return them to their
original glory.

The first of our 5 shows featuring the
Dayton Hamvention! Corey Shields, KB9JHU,
stops by to talk about his presentation
coming up at the TAPR Forum on Friday of
Hamvention 2016 about a satellite ground
station network called SatNOGS. But first,
a few words about the woman who raised me
as a ham... now that she is a silent key.
A short tribute to Margie Rapp, WD9HEE.
