Amateur Radio Field Day June 25-26 to Demonstrate Science, Skill, Service:

The Columbia Amateur Radio Club will hold its annual "Field Day" operation
at the S.C. State Guard Armory on June 25-26. The public is invited to
attend this nationwide event in which radio amateurs across the country
will test and show off their emergency communication capabilities. The
event begins at 2 p.m. and runs 24 hours. The armory is located at 551
Granby Lane near downtown Columbia. The club, along with thousands of radio
amateurs across the nation, will attempt to make contacts with other
operators, or "hams," using a variety of emergency communication
technology, including Morse code, voice and data transmissions. "Field Day
lets us test our emergency communication capabilities and gain experience
using our gear in adverse conditions," CARC president Andrew Haworth
said. "If we perform well on Field Day, there's a better chance we'll be
able to provide crucial communications in the event of a real emergency."
For more than 100 years, amateur radio -- sometimes called ham radio -- has
allowed people from all walks of life to experiment with electronics and
communications techniques, as well as provide a free public service to
their communities during a disaster, all without needing a cellphone or the
internet. Field Day demonstrates ham radio's ability to work reliably under
any conditions from almost any location and create an independent
communications network.
