Chesapeake Ham Radio Operators Simulate Disaster Scenario:

If communications were knocked out during a disaster, how would emergency
personnel interact with the public and each other? That very scenario was
reenacted at Deep Creek Lock Park June 25 and 26 by members of Chesapeake
Amateur Radio Service, who offer an alternative means of communication
during emergencies. Filling generators and stringing extension cords and
lines though trees, members of the Chesapeake group, along with other
amateur radio clubs throughout the United States, participated in "Field
Day," a national mock emergency exercise. They set up a station in a remote
area similar to what they would do if requested by the Radio Amateur Civil
Emergency Service (RACES) during or after a real disaster. During the Field
Day event, radio operators, known as "hams," practiced their emergency
communication readiness skills by simulating disaster conditions and
setting up temporary facilities that can be run without commercial power.
They only used generators and solar power. After setting up operations,
they manned and monitored the station for 24 hours. In the event of a
natural or man-made disaster, amateur radio can provide additional
communications to help manage the situation. Oftentimes after a storm, cell
phone towers are knocked down or, due to extra usage, the service crashes.
Amateur radio can fill in.
