'You Can't Kill Radio Waves':

Amateur radio operators scattered across Northwest Florida will be acting
as ears for many of those impacted by the onslaught of Hurricane Matthew.
With the mighty storm approaching, the call has been made to deploy SARnet,
the Statewide Amateur Radio Network that, with 28 "repeaters" scattered
around the state, monitors emergency traffic. T.H. Merritt, the news
director at WZEP AM radio in DeFuniak Springs, took his turn as North
Florida's SARnet monitor from 10 a.m. until noon Thursday. He said he
heard "lots of interesting stuff," but expects the chatter to intensify as
the storm moves in on Florida. He had another Thursday shift scheduled from
9 to 11 p.m. It is SARnet's job to make sure important information gets
relayed to the right people. "When all else fails, radio works. You can
kill the internet, you can kill cell phones you can even kill cell phone
towers, but you can't kill radio waves," Merritt, said. SARnet is run by
the Amateur Radio Emergency Service, and the call went out Wednesday to
activate ARES statewide, said John Blaisdell, who heads ARES in Walton
County. "We're on 24/7 call up until we hear different," he said.

A man who lives in rural Greene County is okay after dangling from a ham
radio tower about 40 feet in the air. It happened Tuesday afternoon north
of Republic at a home along South Farm Road 53 between Republic and
Interstate 44. Charles Young fell off the tower after he got dizzy and
slipped. The man, who is in his mid-60s, wore a safety harness but his feet
got caught in the tower. That left him hanging from about 40 feet high.
Young's wife called 9-1-1.
