What!? A reference to Vera Lynn's connection to SW radio without
mention of the movie "Dr. Strangelove", Gen. Curtis "Bombs Away" LeMay
and HF SSB communication with nuclear bombers?
Sad.
GE was doing work on DSBsc (double sideband, but no carrier), not so much
original work, but trying to make it practical. I thought they were
hoping to get the contract, there are advantages if you have a synchronous
detector in the receiver.
But Curtis LeMay was a ham, and had a COllins station on his "personal"
airplane (unless I'm thinking of someone else) and used that to show off
SSB, which is where the air force or army went. I think I once saw a
suggestion that Collins was behind it, maybe favoring LeMay to get a foot
in the door. "Have a free S-Line", or something like that.
