The FCC is seeking comments on a proposal to make amateur radio licenses
good for life instead of the current ten year term. The request is based on
the premise that this will lighten the FCCs workload.
That seems a bit far-fetched given that the call sign will still have to be
issued, maintained, and presumably retired at the end of a lifetime. And
along the way the feds will surely still need to administer address
changes, name changes, and class upgrades.
If managing licenses is really such a burden, why not go further and hand
off the entire shooting match to the same folks who now handle license
testing us?
I dont intend to comment on this current proposal as I dont see it having
any impact, good or bad, on the amateur service.
But perhaps you do and you can file your comment online for a limited time.
A quick scan of the comments made so far seems to indicate good support for
the proposal.
