My FT-530 needed new batteries, and I just cracked open my pack and
soldered a new battery pack together. If I recall correctly, the pack
originally used 6 NiCd N cells, but I replaced it with 6 NiMH AAA
cells (the shape was different, but I made it work) and it cost me
less than $10, and has more capacity than it did before. And it even
still works with the same smart charger.

Now, there's a lot more that can be said about replacing packs like
this (about soldering, about NiCd vs. NiMH, etc. I've certainly said
a lot online about it, if you want to google for it), and if you're
afraid to do it, the battery stores can often do this for you too.
But it's something to consider when the battery pack on something runs
like $50, or you can't get a new pack at all from the manufacturer ...
