Slavery was on the way out in the rest of the world, but the
Confederacy was intended to protect slavery within it's borders. Here's
a couple of quotes;

United States Constitution:

No Bill of Attainder or ex post facto Law shall be passed.

Confederate Constitution:

No bill of attainder, ex post facto law, or law denying or impairing
the right of property in negro slaves shall be passed.
