Well, yes, so you have to set targets for homebrewing that are
realistic and don't require the resources of several companies to
achieve. I think this has always been the case but as technology
accelerates the one-man-band can only do so much even with re-use of
the work of others.


However, should always be possible for us to program an FPGA (or
whatever is its modern equivalent) to achieve the same?
