Mike and "incognito" helped me figure it out. On my Icom dual band it is
basically a special memory channel (one on each band) that has the advantage
over the other memories (60) that you can just press one button on the unit
and you get to the frequency you set into the call channel. So the national
simplex frequencies of 146.520 and 446.0 would be naturals to use as call
channels, but from what I can tell (have not actually tried to set it up
like this yet) you could also program in a repeater with offset, and PL.

Not quite. Two meters is 146.520, and 70 cm is 446.0
