People were nuts back then. Seriously. Not that they were born nutty
but the stress of the times made them nutty.

There was no rational reason to hate Lincoln. Lincoln would compromise
on just about anything except the expansion of slavery into the
territories and splitting the Union. Lincoln even had no objection to
the loathsome Corwin Amendment which was intended to permanently prevent
the Federal government from interfering with slavery where it already
existed.

And disunion would have been a disaster, particularly for the
Confederacy. If a state can go free just because it has a hissy fit over
losing an election or they think the new President looks like a chimp or
whatever, where does it end? Do the little states of the Confederacy
then get rolled, one by one, by the Imperial powers of Europe? You might
think the thought process of the rebels might have been sobered up if
they considered the condition of people in places such as India or
Ireland at that time.
