Hmmm? Something like 675 thousand amateur radio licensees in USA alone,
and growing, though slowly, per ARRL stats and statements. A recent

survey
suggested circa $500/yr spent on the hobby per amateur, IIRC, which
suggests about $325 to $375+ million annually in USA alone, or more than
$1 million per day in sales.

Shortwave listening is also up significantly in the USA, and it feeds

into
future amateur radio growth potentials. A good thing too, as our
engineering schools are hurting for lack of qualified and interested
applicants...

Doesn't sound like toothpick collecting or jousting to me ;-)

Yes Amature radio it is a big thing not to mention the subcultures of the
hobby like boatanchors, homebrew, experimental etc... The list is endless
what radio enthusiests are doing and it stimulates other electronic hobby
intrest and reserch in people.
