Good morning and welcome to the weekly news bulletin of the South African

The South African Radio League broadcasts a news bulletin each Sunday in A
frikaans and in English at 08:15 and 08:30 Central African Time respective
ly on HF and various VHF and UHF repeaters around the country. The bulleti

It is with regret that we announce the passing of Chris Schoeman, former
ly ZU6CS, on Thursday 27th January 2021. Chris forfeited his license wit
h the changeover from ZU but kept close contact with East Rand Branch memb
ers.

We extend our sincere condolences to his wife Joey, family and friends.

SARL AWARDS AND TROPHIES DEADLINE TONIGHT

You have until midnight tonight, Sunday 31 January 2021 to submit your n
omination for a SARL Award, your motion for the AGM and your nomination
for individuals to serve on Council to (mailto:secr
) . No late entries will be accepted.

On pages 17 to 19 of the January 2021 issue of Radio ZS, you will find i
nformation about the SARL Awards and Trophies to be handed over at the 202
1 SARL Awards Dinner, as well as information about the nomination to ser
ve on Council and how to submit a motion to the AGM.





Amateur Radio License fee increase

ICASA has informed the SARL that amateur radio Licenses will increase by 3
..3%. The new fees are published on the SARL website.

Please listen carefully to the following important information about amate
ur radio license renewal.

ICASA has implemented a new system which requires all licensees to registe
r on the new system as a user. Thereafter they should create their legal e
ntity which will be approved by the Authority. To create a legal entity t
he user will require a copy of the ID document. If you have the new ID ca
rd both sides are required. A valid email address and personal details mus
t be captured.

Every licensee, who is not yet licensed on the new system, will have t
o submit a legacy license amendment application to transfer the license to
the new system.
The Authority will soon send out notices to licensees about the process an
d guidelines how to register on the system and how to submit a legacy lice
nse amendment.

Licensees can also already pay the license fee via EFT and attach the proo
f of payment to the application when renewal is done on the system. Payme
nt alone will not renew the license.

A new license is only issued once the registration on the new system is co
mpleted and the legacy license amendment has been submitted.

The SARL will publish, on the SARL website, the detailed step by step
instructions once they have been received from ICASA.

Renewals for licences that were applied for and issued on the new online s
ystem will be done on the same system. The Authority will issue notices vi
a email soon, where after the user must click on the renewal button in t
he Manage page to renew.

The ICASA bank details are as follows:

Client Services - Pretoria and in the reference field type in your licenc
e number and call sign.

DO NOT pay the ICASA licence fee into the SARL bank account, all monies
wrongfully paid into the SARL account will be refunded less the bank char
ges associated with these transactions.

VHF ONLINE WORKSHOP ON 20 FEBRUARY

SARL and AMSATSA will join forces on 20 February 2021 to present an online
VHF/UHF workshop on the BlueJeans platform. Attendance at the VHF worksho
p will be free for SARL and AMSATSA members and R50 for non-members. Forma
l registration is required. More details and the programme will be made av
ailable on the SARL and AMSATSA websites.

The programme includes: Next Generation 2 Metre Beacons, Complexity of R
epeater Systems from a technical perspective, the design of the AMSAT SA
dual band Yagi and its performance, and VHF/UHF dongles for SDR operati
on.

The workshop will run from 10:00 - 13:00 CAT followed by an open discussio
n on how amateur radio contributes to technology.

Crowd funding for SARL Next Generation Beacons

In addition to AMSATSA's financial contribution to the SARL Next Generatio
n beacon fund, the group has started a crowd funding campaign on its Pay
fast platform. Contributions to the beacon fund can be made from www.amsat
sa.org.za by clicking one of the payment buttons to contribute R50, R250
or R1000 using your credit card. Donors will be recognised on the SARL an
d AMSATSA websites as well as receiving a confirmation email. The first ne
xt generation beacon will be installed at Bethlehem replacing the analogue
beacon and was fully funded by the SARL. The next two beacons for which f
unding is required will be installed in Cape Town and the northern Karoo.
Your contribution will make it happen sooner.

THE FEBRUARY 2021 RADIO ZS

The February Radio ZS is available for download from the League website,
click on Publications and then Radio ZS Downloads. In this issue we look
at the 60 metre or 5 MHz Band in South Africa and the Work All ZS 60 metr
e Award. There is also information about 60 metres world-wide and Andre,
ZS2ACP has built a 60 m transverter for the FT-101. Emil, ZS1XB tells a
bout the Loop on the Ground receiving antenna and also about vertical ante
nna coils.

There are plans to build your own satellite antenna and in Focus on VHF an
d above, find out about the 2 metre beacon on St Helena Island. We look
at East London's two Lighthouses and in the Museum Piece we look at the T
R9D "Battle of Britain fighter" Radio. And more in this 72 page issue.

CONTEST NEWS

The following contests will take place during February. Saturday 6 Februa
ry is the SARL VHF/UHF FM Activity Day and Sunday 7 February, is the AWA
CW Activity Day. The weekend of 13 and 14 February is the CQ WPX RTTY and
the PACC contests. The SARL National Field Day has been moved to March. 2
0 and 21 February is the ARRL DX CW contest and on 27 February, you can
participate in the first SARL 95 40 m Grid Square Sprint. Get the rules f
or local contests in the 2021 SARL Diary of Events and Contest Manual.

Sixty one logs, reflecting 821 QSOs, were received for the first SARL
Wednesday 80 m Club Sprint. Unfortunately, some contesters lost points
for not following the QSY rule for sprints and some did not even read the
rules! The results have been published in HF Happenings 934

CLUB NEWS - calling all clubs

Here is a challenge for you and your club. Phillip ZS6PVT and Danie plan t
o run a WRARC (ZS6WR) club station in the SARL FM VHF UHF contest on 6 Feb
ruary. This is the ideal opportunity to introduce new club members to cont
esting, promote VHF UHF activity and get the youngsters involved. Philli
p would also like to challenge another club to rally members to partake an
d have an inter-club contest on the sideline. Your station could be run fr
om home or a parked vehicle on a hill and vertical polarization is perfect
as long as the contacts are made and logged. Please read page 50 and 51 o
f the 2021 SARL Diary of Events and Contest Manual for all the detail and
rules. Good luck and see you in the log sheet.

PROPAGATION REPORT

Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, reports that the solar activity is expected to
be at low levels. There are currently no sunspot regions visible and no s
olar flaring is expected.
If you want to do your own frequency predictions, the expected effective
sunspot number for the week will be around one.
The 15 to 30 m bands will provide some DX fun.

Op bladsy 17 tot 19 van die Januarie 2021-uitgawe van Radio ZS vind jy die
inligting oor die SARL-toekennings en trofeë wat tydens die SARL-toe
kennings dinee vir 2021 oorhandig moet word, asook inligting oor die nom
inasie om in die Raad te dien en hoe om 'n mosie in te dien 'n mosie vir d
ie AJV.


AMATEUR RADIO LISENSIEFOOI VERHOGING

ICASA het die SARL meegedeel dat amateur radio lisensies met 3,3% sal to
e neem. Die nuwe fooie word op die SARL-webwerf gepubliseer.

Luister aandagtig na belangrike inligting oor die hernuwing van amateur li
sensies

ICASA het 'n nuwe stelsel geïmplementeer wat vereis dat alle lisensie
houers as gebruiker op die nuwe stelsel moet registreer. Daarna moet hull
e hul regspersoon skep wat deur die Owerheid goed gekeur sal word. Om 'n r
egspersoon te skep, sal die gebruiker 'n afskrif van die ID-dokument ben
odig. As u die nuwe ID-kaart het, is beide kante nodig. 'N Geldige e-pos
adres en persoonlike besonderhede moet vas gelê word.

Elke lisensie houer, wat nog nie op die nuwe stelsel gelisensieer is nie
, moet 'n aansoek om 'n wesenlike lisensie wysiging indien om die lisens
ie na die nuwe stelsel oor te dra.
Die Owerheid sal binnekort kennisgewings aan lisensie houers uitstuur oor
die proses en riglyne oor hoe om op die stelsel te registreer en hoe om '
n legaat-wysiging in te dien.
Lisensie houers kan ook reeds die lisensie geld via EFT betaal en die bewy
s van betaling aan die aansoek heg as die stelsel hernu word. Betaling all
een hernu nie die lisensie nie.

'N Nuwe lisensie word eers uitgereik sodra die registrasie op die nuwe ste
lsel voltooi is en die wettige lisensie wysiging ingedien is.

Die SARL sal die uitvoerige instruksies op die SARL-webwerf publiseer sodr
a dit van ICASA ontvang is

Hernuwings vir lisensies waarvoor aansoek gedoen is en wat op die nuwe aan
lyn stelsel uitgereik word, sal op dieselfde stelsel gedoen word. Die ow
erheid sal binnekort kennisgewings per e-pos uitreik, waarna die gebruik
er die hernuwing knoppie op die bladsy Beheer moet klik om te hernu.

BHF/UHF AANLYN WERKSWINKEL OP 20 FEBRUARIE

SARL en AMSATSA gaan saam snoer op 20 Februarie 2021 om 'n aanlyn VHF / UH
F-werks winkel op die BlueJeans-platform aan te bied. Die bywoning van die
VHF-werks winkel is gratis vir SARL- en AMSATSA-lede en R50 vir nie-lede.
Formele registrasie is nodig. Meer besonderhede en die program sal op die
SARL- en AMSATSA-webwerwe beskikbaar wees.

Die program bevat: Next Generation 2 Meter Beacons, Complexity of Repeat
er Systems vanuit 'n tegniese perspektief, die ontwerp van die AMSAT SA

Massa befondsing vir "SARL Next Generation Beacons"

Benewens die finansiële bydrae van AMSATSA tot die SARL Next Generati
on baken fonds, het die groep 'n massa befondsings veldtog op sy betaalb
are platform begin. Bydraes tot die baken fonds kan gedoen word vanaf www.
amsatsa.org.za deur op een van die betalings knoppies te klik om R50, R2
50 of R1000 by te dra met u krediet kaart. Skenkers sal op die SARL- en AM
SATSA-webwerwe erken word, sowel as 'n bevestigings-e-pos. Die eerste vo
lgende generasie baken sal op Bethlehem geïnstalleer word om die anal

DIE FEBRUARIE 2021 RADIO ZS

Die Februarie Radio ZS kan vanaf die Liga-webwerf afgelaai word, klik op
Publications en dan Radio ZS Downloads. In hierdie uitgawe kyk ons na die
60 m of 5 MHz-band in Suid-Afrika en die Werk Alle ZS 60 Meter-toekenning
.. Daar is ook inligting oor 60 meter wêreld wyd en Andre, ZS2ACP,
het 'n 60 m-omskakelaar vir die FT-101 gebou. Emil, ZS1XB vertel van di
e Lus op die Grond-ontvangs antenna en ook oor vertikale antenna spoele.

Daar is planne om jou eie satelliet antenna te bou en in Fokus op BHF en h
oër, vind uit oor die 2 meter baken op St. Helena-eiland. Ons kyk n
a Oos-Londen se twee vuurtorings en in die Museum Stuk kyk ons na die TR9D
"Battle of Britain fighter" Radio. En meer in hierdie uitgawe van 72 blad
sye.

KOMPETISIE NUUS

Die volgende kompetisies vind gedurende Februarie plaas. Op Saterdag 6 Feb
ruarie is die SARL BHF/UHF FM Aktiwiteits dag en op Sondag 7 Februarie,
die ADV GG Aktiwiteits dag. Die naweek van 13 en 14 Februarie is die CQ W
PX RTD en die PACC-kompetisies. Die SARL Nasionale Veld dag is na Maart ve
rskuif. 20 en 21 Februarie is die ARRL DX GG kompetisie en op 27 Februarie
kan jy aan die eerste SARL 95 40 m Ruit blok naelloop deelneem. Kry die r
eëls vir plaaslike kompetisies in die SARL 2021 Dagboek van Gebeure e
n Kompetisie Handleiding.

Een en sestig logstate, wat 821 QSOs weer spieël, is ontvang vir
die eerste SARL Woensdag 80 m Klub Naelloop. Ongelukkig het sommige deeln
emers punte verloor omdat hulle nie die QSY-reël vir naellope gevolg
het nie en ander het nie eers die reëls gelees nie! Die uitslae is i

KLUB NUUS

Roep alle klubs. Hier is 'n uitdaging vir u en u klub. Phillip ZS6PVT en D
anie beplan om op 6 Februarie 'n WRARC (ZS6WR) klub stasie in die SARL FM
VHF UHF-wedstryd te beman. Dit is die ideale geleentheid om nuwe klub led
e bekend te stel aan die wedstryd, VHF UHF-aktiwiteite te bevorder en di
e jongmense betrokke te kry. Phillip wil ook 'n ander klubs uitdaag om led
e saam te trek en aan die kantlyn deel te neem en 'n interklub wedstryd te
hê. U kan vanaf u huis of 'n geparkeerde voertuig op 'n heuwel u sta
sie bedryf, en vertikale polarisasie is perfek, solank die kontak gema

HF VOORTPLANTINGSVOORSPELLING

Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, berig dat die verwagte sonaktiwiteitsvlak laag
gaan wees. Tans is daar nie sonvlekke sigbaar nie en word daar nie sonfak
kels verwag nie.
Diegene wat hulle eie frekwensie voorspellings wil doen, kan 'n verwagte
effektiewe sonvlektelling van een vir die week gebruik.
Radio amateurs kan bruikbare DX openinge op die 15 tot 30 m bande verwag.
