Hello, Reg

Well, I'm sure you'll get some flames on that comment, but it sure is nice
to hear some honesty once in a while. I've read comments carried in news
organizations some years ago. A number of Europeans were appalled by the
number of homeless in the United States. Oh, some of the "conservatives"
have broadcast a lot of hot air and some folks will call anyone disagreeing
with their position "card - carrying - liberals", but the fact is there has
to be some reasonable compromise to keep as many folks happy as possible.
Also, it is necessary for any civilized nation to provide some level of
support for those citizens unable to take care of themselves. Mind me, I am
not saying that we are or are not doing that toady. However, it is
fortunate that we have a very powerful weapon here. It is called the vote.
If enough folks get upset, it will show despite the 30 second sound bites
and handshaking LOL

The death toll in France from August's
blistering heat wave was nearly 15,000 . . . .

============================

It must not be forgotten the health of French nation has considerable
improved since August. The undoubted evidence for this is a much reduced
death rate amongst the elderly which will last for several years.

The same sort of statistics apply to other countries which suffered from

the
heatwave but didn't bother to publish them, ie., for political reasons

they
kept it secret.

The French government should be congratulated on its honesty as it should

be
on other matters of international interest and importance.

Vive la France ! Vive l'Europe !

Jim:

I consider myself to be a conservative, and I find the heat wave death toll
in France to be appalling. However, I don't view this tragedy as any
particular human failing; it is, indeed, an act of God. And while I won't
indulge in any attempt to interpret this tragedy, it must be obvious that
mortal men can do things to prevent a recurrence of such an incident. This
does not counteract God's will, it just serves to demonstrate that we've
learned the lesson God intended to reveal to us.

In our advanced Western culture, in spite of our social and technological
advancement and the great wealth we enjoy, we are still beset with age-old
social problems, such as the homeless, the ill, and the impoverished.
Unfortunately, here in the United States and other "advanced" Western
societies, we have, in fact, created a lot of these social problems in our
attempt to solve them. By creating Welfare States which promise to be
the answer to each and every conceivable social problem, we have
created vast numbers of dependents who have arisen through the
weakness of those who were first served by a "caring society." Shortly
thereafter, it became clear to the supposedly well-meaning "liberals" who
originated the Welfare State that in order to maintain and increase their
political power, and therefore advance their allegedly "progressive"
concept of social engineering, they simply permitted the number of
dependent people expand through the promise that they would be
cared for by the State as long as the liberal, socialist political ideology
remained in political power. That was the power of the vote to which
you referred -- and that kind of voting has given us a society which has
run amok.

I work every day with people who genuinely deserve all the assistance
they can receive from the working public, because they genuinely,
legitimately cannot provide for themselves. However, when I go off
work and am waiting in line at the supermarket, and the lady in front
of me with several young children pays for her groceries with food
stamps, I am not filled with the same compassion I have for my
mentally retarded, physically disabled, and elderly clients. I consider
people who "work the system" just because the system exists to be
engaged in the worst kind of immorality; they are little more than thieves.
In virtually every case, they became dependent on society simply
because a system was in place which allowed them to behave in an
irresponsible manner -- with hard-working people like you and me
picking up the tab in perpetuity. I have no sympathy for them, only
abject disgust for their despicable behaviour and the system which
not only supports it, but even "celebrates" it as individual "choice."
Naturally, the children, while they themselves are innocent, are used
as the excuse for keeping the system in place, and therefore ensuring
that it will always keep the cycle of dependency going.

Throughout the decline of our Western culture, we have always heard
that conservatives like myself are "mean-spirited," that we are uncaring,
hard-hearted monsters who would starve children and cause death and
destruction in any conceivable way. However, the opposite is true; it is
the liberals who are creating the downfall of our society. As the expense
of maintaining the Welfare State increases, the burden of the declining
numbers of producers will increase as the numbers of dependents also
rises. At some point, the system will collapse, and then what? The
"haves" and the have-nots will go to war against each other. I'm not
talking about a war of words and ideas; I'm talking about a shooting and
killing war. Such an end would be the ultimate immorality of the
liberal, socialist ideology, even though the violence will be blamed on
the remaining conservative producers who simply reached their breaking
point.

Fortunately, there is still a way out of the dismal future we face. Our
society needs to make a fundamental change in which we stop viewing
social perfection as the ability of the state to provide for everyone, to
the ability of the state to know it's place -- to give us the freedom to
achieve to the best of our ability without necessarily making government
the instrument of individual achievement and success. We need to
take the first step in that direction by putting an immediate end to all
state and federal welfare programs which directly provide sustenance
to those who choose an illegitimate, immoral lifestyle. We need to
close down our borders to those who cross them simply because they
know that once they do, their children automatically become bona-fide
American citizens which then qualify the parents to receive public
assistance. We need to bring an end to each and every political concept
which supports immoral and unproductive lifestyles, and let people
know that they are the only ones who bear the burden of their actions.

You are correct that we need to vote -- and the ones who need to exercise
that right to vote are the ones who will ultimately pay for the Welfare
State -- and in numbers large enough to overrule those who seek to benefit
from it. We must regain and hold a socially conservative majority in our
government. If we don't, and continue along our present course, it won't
be too long before achieve terminal velocity as we proceed down the
slippery slope of our own destruction. If this change doesn't happen in
my lifetime, I hope I'm not around when we hit bottom.
