ARISS antenna selection?
 

I have read a circularly polarized Yagi is appropriate for ARISS
communications. Is there a vendor that offers a crossed design? Or,
better still, is there a construction article that I can refer to?

What are you using for this type of communication?

I'm trying to set up a contact for my son's school class.

Several manufacturers make such antennas, and to
change "polarity" (from clockwise, to counter
clockwise), change phaseing lines feeding the
(say) horizontal elements, from 90 degrees to 270
degrees, relative to the feed of the vertical
elements. Try Cushcraft, M-Squared, HYGAIN, ect.
Think, also some of the handbooks also show them, as
well check ANSAT's website! Jim NN7K

Have you contacted the AMSAT guys (www.amsat.org)? I assume you are
aware of the need for gain required for you particular station. I thought
a linearly polarized 3 or 4 element Yagi was adequate. So, I wonder if
the complexity of making a crossed Yagi CP is justified when that will have
only 3 dB improvement with that same boom length.

All news to me, so far. The ARISS website suggested circular
polarization and up to 100W. AMSAT is saying 3 elements and an HT. Quite
a variation...

The guys here ran a successful contact a few months ago. They used
their cubesat satellite setup. Here's a link to an article about it.

FWIW, I worked ARISS with 50 watts and a simple ground plane. They were
about 400 miles away (ground distance) and said I had full quieting. It was
an almost random contact. A web site mentioned that they were active; I
turned on my little FM rig and there he was. No one else called and we
chatted for about two minutes.

that's the difference between "maybe I can hit them with a HT in the
parking lot" and "Guaranteed contact with lots of link margin in front
of a crowd of expectant school children and news media"

Hi Steve,

Take a look at the "Cheap Yagi" page of the Clear Lake (TX) ARC. You could
make a very inexpensive crossed yagi following their instructions.
