The "Beverage" antenna (proper name of the inventor), will work as a
transmit antenna, but is relatively lossy. it falls in the class of traveling wave antennas and being so close to the ground it has very good coupling to it which creates much of the loss. it can also be very directional like any long wire with multiple lobes depending on length and frequency.
