We tried a shunt fed tower some weeks back and gave up on it due to
poor beacon range.

We are now using a 130 feet high flat top antenna with a horizontal
run of 250 feet between two 140 feet high towers.

The flat top antenna has a Vertical wire 130 feet high connected dead
center to a cable that is suspended and insulated from the two
support towers.

This antenna is an 'traditional' NDB beacon antenna

Driving in my car with the car radio tuned to 530 khz I can hear the
beacon loud and clear for 40 miles!!

When we used the shunt fed tower tuned to a VSWR of 1.1 to 1 the
range at best was
15 miles

Using the same ground radials

we are located about 50 miles south of Nashville,TN just off of
I-24 Manchester,TN

I can "see" a CW signal on 529KHz with baudline on the Linux PC, the
TS680S HF TXCVR and the 7MHz dipole!. It is currently about 10dB above
the (FFT) noise here. (6AM) I can barely or not at all hear it.

I am not however satisfied that it isn't a birdie or other RF source.
(It disappears with the antenna unplugged) There appears to be no ident
on the signal. What is the period and method of identification?

I'm getting a foreign-language broadcast station on that frequency, on
three radios (FT-1000, TS-940S, IC-735) and three antennas (two inverted
Vs and a Carolina Windom).

Whatever it is is way too strong to hear an NDB through.

Despite lots of static crashes, and BC Band bleed through (though I could
not find the BC station that matched the QRM I was receiveing) I was able
to hear LYQ at approx 08:00 UTC, 40mi northwest of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Received with an Icom-706IIG and an 80M Carolina Windom.

Thats about 562 miles.

late as 1047 UT on 28/October
during the Michigan Area Radio Enthusiasts DX Camp near Brighton MI.
Equip consisted of a Drake SPR4 and 500 foot long wire antenna. VERY
easy copy.
