Can antyone recomend a 2m ANT for parking garage?
I park in a parking garage at work, so my 2 meter anetnnae won't fit on the
car (P.T. Cruiser) while in the garage. Removing it, just before entering the garage is not an option. Does anyone have a recomendation on an alternate 2 meter antennae? Bruce Meyer www.kg4tac.net |
There is a motorized antenna for situations like yours. I have seen it in
AES and Ham Station literature.. Mitch KD4HTW "Bruce D. Meyer" wrote in message m... I park in a parking garage at work, so my 2 meter anetnnae won't fit on the car (P.T. Bruce,
I would think a 1/4 wave (about 19") should fit. 'Doc |

Just mount the thing lower on the car. Bob k5qwg |

Wow! Excellent replies, each of you. I am checking each one. I shouldn't
have waited this long to ask. (It's been over a year since I had a mobile, and the window mounted (external) rubber duck on an HT just doesn't have the reach that a real antennae does. Can you at least bend something over? Comet makes a series of VHF/UHF

Bruce-- there is an antenna--made for heavy equipment, and railroads that
would solve your problem, if you could find one-- these are spendy, or if spmeone can tell you how to build one-- Used lots of them, they are called an EXCALIBUR antenna, and are about 3-4 inches high, about 18-20 inches long, and look kinda like an anvil with the center hollowed out (these are a "SLOT" antenna, and, tho mount horizontally, radiate in the verticle plane!) If can find someone here, that can design one, and probably be pretty good market for them!, might give that a try--would take 2 or 3 mag mounts the comercial version mounts with 6 sheet metal screws, or bolts! But they do work, and quite well (used for locomotives, and for talking hot box detectors on railroad on old S.P. on signal cases for various detectors, they look like someone put a "HANDLE" on a signal case!! Also, might find under the EXCALIBUR name , on Motorola's web page ( food for thought )?? Jim NN7K (ex radioman-- Southern, and UNION Pacific Railroads ) P.S. they also have one, covers 450-470 MHz . Wow! I never heard of such. I remeber an antennae we had on an M113A3 APC
for the Air Force. Looked just like a sharks fin, but only about 4 inches tall. I will do some searching for Excalibur. Thank you for passing that on. I hear you. When I knocked my antennae off i had just swooped on into a
parking garage (I had a pickup then) and knocked that sucker right off the top of my truck. My blood froze in my veins... "bunnydawg" wrote in message .. . I have a PT Druiser, so almost the eintire length of the 5/8th wave would
radiate directly into the body of my car. if I mounted onto the plastic bumper. Fold-away IS an option, that and the shorter 1/4 wave. I am researching a few of the posts, and will now add the Comet to my list. Thank you for your help. Bruce Meyer www.kg4tac.net "Mikey" wrote in message ... Can you at least bend something over? Try the Comet SBB-1NMO dual band mounted on mag mount base with NMO
connector such as Larsen MNO MM. Page 98 of HRO Winter 03 catalog, $39.95. It's 17 inches long (plus an inch for the mag mount), looks like a rubber duck, and is super flexible. I have one on my Toyota Land Cruiser which is quite tall. The antenna hits some of the overheads in an 84 inch (7 ft) clearance garage, but it just flexes and plonks along. I would think that your vehicle is not as tall as mine so that even the Larsen NMOQ 2/70 B at 18 inches might work. That one is on page 100 of HRO catalog. I use a diamond NR72BNMO aboutt 14" or so. I get great results and it
is very low profile. I live around Memphis, TN, and I work on the other side of town from our repeater and consistantly get in on low power. Gain is only about 2.1 on 2M and 70CM, but does me well. This sounds good. Since I already have a Larsen NMO Mag Mount, this makes
for good economy also. Thank-you. Bruce "Dick Ballard" wrote in message ... Try the Comet SBB-1NMO dual band mounted on mag mount base with NMO connector such as Larsen MNO MM. I am glad to hear this, I was a bit discouraged by a post about reduced
perofrmance. i understand that going to 1/4 wave will giv eme reduced performance, but glad to hear you can still deal with the concrete jungle. I work in Columbia, SC We have a good bunch of repeaters in the City (Even an IRLP!) You folks have been very helpful. (Why did I wait so long to ask?) sheesh. http://www.antennex.com/preview/2mddrr.htm. They are available commercially, too. Phil, KB2HQ "Bob Miller" wrote in message ... On Sun, 15 Feb 2004 02:30:24 GMT, "Bruce D. Had forgot about the DDRR -- After further checking , the geometry of it,
and the Excalibur, they are really the same antennas, just that the DDRR is formed into a circle, while the Excalibur is a straight line The Excalibur looks like : __X__________________ /__X__________________ , with the middle open, 1/4 wavelength long and as stated, "X's" would be the feedpoint ! is a "slot" antenna . These are related to aircraft antennas, where , a slot is cut into the frame, and then fed with R.F. You don't see it, as it is covered with fabric, plastic, or some other non-conductive media ! As a further aside, is used , in bombers, extensively, and have arrays of these , stacked in phase!! reason is if one, or 2 shot out, the antenna will still work, literally until the plane is destroyed!
