Old timer here, (VK5JE) wanting to get back into HF. Would really appreciate
pointers to web based info on build it yourself 80m vertical or dipole. Have
somewhat limited real estate!

Occasionally I'll listen to the online receiver made available by
K2JEU (http://www.ralabs.com/webradio/). Over the years he has used
various diffent antennas, ranging from longwires, to beams to most
recently a roughly 75 ft sloper. However, at one point he was using
40+ vertical from zerofive and it was vastly superior to every other
antenna I've see him use (excepting the beam, which doesn't belong in
the same comparison class). I almost couldn't believe it. I'd have
expected a large vertical to be pretty noisy, but the zerofive antenna
was incredibly quiet. I don't have space for such an antenna myself,
but I was awfully impressed with this one. It was really something.

Quietness isn't usually a good attribute of a receiving antenna. A dummy
load is, after all, extremely quiet. Or do you mean that it had some
magical property of separating the signal you wanted to listen to from
all the others?

I doubt that it was a magical property, but it delivered more signal
and less noise than the other antennas he's used (at least while I've
been visiting his site). Hard to say what would explain it as many of
the details (grounds, radials, etc.) of his setup aren't set forth on
his website.
