Default News group protocol - or the Lie Direct

TOUCHSTONE.
"...I did dislike the cut of a certain courtier's beard;
he sent me word, if I said his beard was not cut well,
he was in the mind it was.
This is call'd the Retort Courteous.

"If I sent him word again it was not well cut,
he would send me word he cut it to please himself.
This is call'd the Quip Modest.

"If again it was not well cut, he disabled my judgment.
This is call'd the Reply Churlish.

"If again it was not well cut, he would answer I spake not true.
This is call'd the Reproof Valiant.

"If again it was not well cut, he would say I lie.
This is call'd the Countercheck Quarrelsome.

"And so to the Lie Circumstantial

"and the Lie Direct."

JAQUES.
"And how oft did you say his beard was not well cut?"

TOUCHSTONE.
"I durst go no further than the Lie Circumstantial,
nor he durst not give me the Lie Direct;
and so we measur'd swords and parted."

JAQUES.
"Can you nominate in order now the degrees of the lie?"

TOUCHSTONE.
"O, sir, we quarrel in print by the book, as you have books for
good manners. I will name you the degrees.

"The first, the Retort Courteous;
the second, the Quip Modest;
the third, the Reply Churlish;
the fourth, the Reproof Valiant;
the fifth, the Countercheck Quarrelsome;
the sixth, the Lie with Circumstance;
the seventh, the Lie Direct.

"All these you may avoid but the Lie Direct; and you may avoid
that too with an If. I knew when seven justices could not take up
a quarrel; but when the parties were met themselves, one of them
thought but of an If, as:
'If you said so, then I said so.'
And they shook hands, and swore brothers.

"Your If is the only peace-maker; much virtue in If."

"As You Like It," Bill Shakespeare

The mind plays tricks on you. You play tricks back! It's like you're

Thank you Mike,

Dan, my ever shocked groupie,

Everyone I know has a big but. Let's talk about your big but.

Could this be considered
groupie abuse? ;-)

It might now.

Sorry Richard, your groupies don't tend to be people with technical
degrees or IQ's above 110.

Although I don't consider myself a "groupie" of Richard's, I do read all
his post's because I find him very entertaining - in the best sense of
the word - his wit is probably the best in the group, if sometimes
acerbic.

Perhaps Pee-Wee Herman is a bit pedestrian for your tastes, so here is
another one for you.

"We don't receive wisdom; we must discover it for ourselves after a
journey that no one can take for us or spare us."

Most fitting, and you certainly know the source, don't you?

And for what it is worth, the IQ here is measured out at 150. Let me know
if that is enough. If I'm not smart enough, or not technical enough for
you, please feel free to filter my messages.

Only 150? Ahaha! Inferiority complex!

Mind you... could be worse... Did you know that at the last count nearly
half the population had less than the average IQ?

Would you believe that the largest group of people
with the same IQ are neither above or below average? :-)

It's alarming I tell ya! fortunately one group amongst us isn't afraid
to stare down the foul gullet of the truth:

for the obtuse among us, it's a satire site.

It all depends on the fineness of the tool. Present measurement
techniques do indeed have most people at that statistical "average
intelligence". But I liken it to using a meter that has only 10 volt
increments. A lot of different voltages can be covered in gross
increments like that.
