I you prefer Antennas fine I have been told recently by an Elmer that this was the correct term. The question here is not grammar but staying on topic for this forum. I'm not trying to cause an argument we have different forums so everyone can have there say. Let’s just stay on the topics of each forum. 73's :) |

What antenna can function without parameters?; A feed-line, a rig to drive it, a media to propagate through, an operator to operate it, inherent dangers, neighbors to complain of it, etc.? grin Regards, JS |

Random House Webster's Unabridged Dictionary, Second Ed., explicitly states that antennae is plural for the appendages on insects, and antennas is plural for the electromagnetic device. These different plural usages are by far the most common in my experience. I only occasionally see "antennae" to describe radio antennas, mostly in very old texts or when used by an academic -- or rraa poster -- trying to emphasize his distance from the hoi polloi. Your reference for "correctness" didn't happen to be a zoology text, did it? Roy Lewallen, W7EL |

One additional point.
On my bookshelf a _Antennas_ (Kraus), _Physical Design of Yagi Antennas_ (Leeson), _HF Antennas for All Locations_ (Moxon), _Antennas and Transmission Lines_ (Kuecken), _Radiowave Propagation and Antennas for Personal Communcations_ (Siwak), _Lines, Waves, and Antennas_ (Brown et al), _Antennas and Waves_ (King and Harrison), _Transmission Lines, Antennas, and Wave Guides_ (King et al), _Directional Broadcast Antennas_ (Layton), and _TV and Other Receiving Antennas_ (Bailey). Other books have "Antennas" in chapter titles, e.g., in _Antenna Engineering Handbook_ (Johnson) we find "Loop Antennas", "Small Antennas", "Microstrip Antennas", "Leaky-Wave Antennas", and so forth. I don't have a single text with "Antennae" in the title, chapter heading, or body. But then, I don't have any entomology texts at all. If "antennae" is to be the "correct" plural for radio antenna, an awful lot of very well known authors and publishers need to be made aware of it. Roy Lewallen, W7EL |

The original point was not whether the correct plural form of antenna is antennas. One antenna and two antennas ok? This forum is about antennas not songs that was my point. Why can’t we stay on topic? I’m a new Ham and want to learn more about Antennas. I have been an Amateur for 4 months and went from Tech to Extra in 2 ½ months aced all 3 tests. My interest is becoming the best Amateur Radio Operator I can be. Along this line I’m looking for help, at age 64 it is just as important to me as it is to a 10 year old Amateur. 73's :) |

Never aced anything. My scores belong in the Witness Protection Program. ARRL Operating Manual is good source for beginners. www.arrl.org/catalog and http://www.arrl.org/catalog/index.ph...gory=Operating Also, http://www.arrl.org/catalog/?item=1018#top for the ARRL Handbook. (Can't tell why it's listed separately.) Not everybody likes the ARRL. I do. Much useful info shows up in the newsgroups. Why can’t we stay on topic? That is the age old question with the newsgroups, Howard. I’m a new Ham and want to learn more about Antennas. It is possible that you are fairly new to Netnews. While a place to learn and teach and have fun, it is also largely unregulated. So we get a fairly high noise to signal ratio. In addition to the off topic forays, many of our more accomplished members have favorite topics that can go on for quite a while, long past any real reason, just tit for tat comments. The best strategy is to just accept that there will be off topic and run-on threads in the newsgroup, and either filter or otherwise ignore them. That in no way means that you can't tweak someone once in a while! hehe I have been an Amateur for 4 months and went from Tech to Extra in 2 ½ months aced all 3 tests. My interest is becoming the best Amateur Radio Operator I can be. Along this line I’m looking for help, at age 64 it is just as important to me as it is to a 10 year old Amateur. A general rule of thumb is to post a question, and the first few answers will be the relevant ones. After that all bets are off. Regarding the age thing, It is an excellent hobby/avocation for a retiree or young ham. I got into the ARS later than some, at 46 years old, but it's all good.
