I've been using usenet for about 15 years with various names. I just read
the announcement from AT&T that they are ending usenet services very
soon.
That sucks. But so does growing old in general. Still, quite often it
beats
the alternative.

To all of those that I have chatted with over the years and whom I may
never
chat again, thanks. It's been fun.

Hello, and if that's so can't you find another ISP? Even if you don't
have access to usenet, there are other non-usenet ham radio forums and
discussion groups. For a long time usenet/nntp was the only game in town
but there are plenty of alternativies out there now. Sincerely, and 73s

I guess I was thinking that if AT&T withdrew their support of usenet, it
wouldn't be long until its lack of validation (usenet) by such a famous
leader in communications would encourage more and mother smaller companies
to follow suit, eventually leading to a lack of use and accreditation,
socially.

This is like worrying about the auto industry failing if Packard
doesn't make it through the bail-out this summer.

I've seen various ISP's chunk my usenet for quite a while.
First it was the old dial up I used to use.. Same ole story..
Not many people use it they claim..
The latest was Comcast.. They dumped usenet about a
year ago I think..
The number of ISP's carrying usenet is dwindling fast.
I've been using Google groups since the time that my
dial up shut it down..
Many think I've probably lost my mind, but I've grown to
actually prefer it over the usual usenet readers.
I see the whole thread at once, and don't have to click
each message to read em.. Also.. it's the archive..
So say someone started a thread in 1997 titled
"my tower fell over and crushed my car", and then
someone else came along in 2009 with the same
title, I'll see both of them.
If Google dumps usenet, I'll probably just quit using
it if I can't find any other free web sites. Most of the
others I see have been fairly lousy.. IE: take days
to refresh, etc..
Google has been fairly instant refresh for quite a while
unless something is broke.
