Hi

An OM is telling me that there was in the past a version of the
MFJ-949E who had a variable coil using a cursor instead of a switch to
tap the coil as now.

Any comment on that?

the MFJ949E and the (Deluxe) Versatuner II (MFJ969 IIRC)?

The '949E uses a switched coil, and the '969 uses a roller inductor, IMHO a
pretty poor roller inductor that uses insulating material that softens when
it is hot and makes the tuner prone to serious damage under some poor
operating conditions.
