Default Declining river towns of the U.S.

The wife and I journied down to the drain portion of Illinois to visit
some of the older towns. One town alongside a river had a good side to
it but down town alongside the river seemed somewhat run down.
A walk down what originally was main street
was a collection of buildings some occupied and some not. Looked thru
the window of one and there were various pictures of the past, men
with bowler hats and women with long black dresses depicting the hard
times of the past which forewarned of its future.
On the wall at the side of the montage was a thermometer like diagram
showing the various water levels the river rose with one of which was
caused by the earthquake at Madrid Illinois and where the uppermost
point looked like the middle of the second floor. The next shop window
was empty as was the inside except for an easle holding up a picture
of George W Bush with the caption
Biggest disaster ever!
A wonderful example of English humour.
