It's not the most efficient in my experience (which is limited with respect to these) but it seems to work well enough if you have a decent repeater system that is the target. One plus is that you can usually get most of the half wave above the roofline. For all around flexibility I still like the simple quarter wave vertical for 2m FM. Enough high angle for metro downtown use, but that involves either holes or magnets. tom K0TAR |

He said the film sandwiched in the safety glass darkened from being heated. As I recall, he was using 50 watts. This stuff is all trade-offs, eh? |

Never heard of that before, and I know lots of people who've used them over the 30+ year period they've been around. Including myself. I'd like to see pictures. And also know how much power the guy was sending to an antenna system rated for a specific number of watts. tom K0TAR |

Also whether he installed it correctly and tuned it correctly. tom K0TAR |

I looked for something (anything) before I posted, came up with nothing and almost didn't post it. More looking just now, trying different search terms and still nothing. Maybe it was BS. One lone story isn't very impressive. |

Don't know your car, but does it have a hitch?, if it does you can make a
mount & bolt it to the hitch or where the hitch is bolted...Go to some of the screwdriver dealers like High Sierra & look at all the mounts on many vehicles to give you an idea...Howard K0ACF "bpuharic" wrote in message ... Some years back, I went to a welding shop and asked them to weld a steel strap to the car for an antenna mount. They found a spot on the left rear where the strap would stick out and hold a mobile antenna. The shop rounded the edges on the part of the strap sticking out, and drilled a hole in the strap for the insulated whip connector. It worked out great. --Wayne W5GIE |

thanks, joe! that's a possibility and it would get the whip above roof level. One other possibility is one of the four magnet magmount setups. Some even come with coax. I've even seen such mounts used for screwdrivers if you still have your prior one. Before anyone points out they have to be grounded properly, the mounting holes for the roof mount offer access to at least some grounding with the proper short bolt. I suspect such a scheme might have the grounding strap()/wire(s) too long at 10 meters, but for 17 meters through 75, probably should be adequate. |

On many cars these days, there is a plastic cover at the end of the roof rack that covers a bolt that holds the rack onto the car. A ring lug under the bolt and a black powerpole connector glued into a notch cut in that plastic cover might give a really nice connection to the metal roof. |
