Well there's always thru-the-glass. It's not the most efficient in my
experience (which is limited with respect to these) but it seems to work
well enough if you have a decent repeater system that is the target.
One plus is that you can usually get most of the half wave above the
roofline.

For all around flexibility I still like the simple quarter wave vertical
for 2m FM. Enough high angle for metro downtown use, but that involves
either holes or magnets.

My older Element had plastic covers over the mounts for the roof rack.
Perhaps you can mount the antenna to the same brackets.

I saw a note from a guy who "cooked" part of his window with the thru-
the-glass approach. He said the film sandwiched in the safety glass
darkened from being heated. As I recall, he was using 50 watts.

This stuff is all trade-offs, eh?

Never heard of that before, and I know lots of people who've used them
over the 30+ year period they've been around. Including myself. I'd
like to see pictures. And also know how much power the guy was sending
to an antenna system rated for a specific number of watts.

Sorry, how much power the system was _rated_ for. You stated 50 watts
delivered. Also whether he installed it correctly and tuned it correctly.

Sorry, too, that this was years ago and I cannot recall the source. I
looked for something (anything) before I posted, came up with nothing
and almost didn't post it. More looking just now, trying different
search terms and still nothing. Maybe it was BS. One lone story
isn't very impressive.

would prefer not cutting the car. on my old honda CRV i had a piece of
angled aluminim i bolted to the spare tire mount. the element is
protrusion free, unfortunately, so there's nothing to hang anything on

Don't know your car, but does it have a hitch?, if it does you can make a
mount & bolt it to the hitch or where the hitch is bolted...Go to some of
the screwdriver dealers like High Sierra & look at all the mounts on many

hi howard and thanks...no, i checked that. the element is barren of
any attachment points...very well thought out!

i used to have a screwdriver. liked it but it was a BITCH to ground
and it wouldnt work right without a great ground...

but looking at the mounts for the high sierra may give me some
ideas....

Some years back, I went to a welding shop and asked them to weld a steel
strap to the car for an antenna mount. They found a spot on the left rear
where the strap would stick out and hold a mobile antenna. The shop rounded
the edges on the part of the strap sticking out, and drilled a hole in the
strap for the insulated whip connector. It worked out great.

I drilled a hole in the ceneter of the roof of my wifes Nissan. Two
years later traded it in. I removed the antenna mount and plugged it
with a snap in rubber plug. No effect on resale value.

One other possibility is one of the four magnet magmount setups. Some even
come with coax. I've even seen such mounts used for screwdrivers if you
still have your prior one. Before anyone points out they have to be
grounded properly, the mounting holes for the roof mount offer access to at
least some grounding with the proper short bolt. I suspect such a scheme
might have the grounding strap()/wire(s) too long at 10 meters, but for 17
meters through 75, probably should be adequate.

On many cars these days, there is a plastic cover at the end of the roof
rack that covers a bolt that holds the rack onto the car. A ring lug
under the bolt and a black powerpole connector glued into a notch cut in
that plastic cover might give a really nice connection to the metal roof.

I don't know what an Element looks like but if it has a hatchback or trunk lid I can show you a way to mount an antenna without cutting or drilling any holes - I came up with this mount for running my Hamsticks on the back of my truck which has a full hard lid that I didn't want to drill any holes in - can't guarantee it will work for your vehicle but I can send you pics - just tell me where to send them
