Yes Jerry, I suspect that none of this gear exists except for the text
above. This is very likely a scam. The worst part of it is that I
suspect it is being perpetrated by a ham radio operator.

Yup, I don't see why a single ham would have all of this equipment. It
looks like someone just got a list of model numbers from various sites
and put it together, without understanding what they were. That's what
tipped me off and why I started investigating.

I sincerely doubt it is a ham. A ham would have a better idea of what's
being listed. And it didn't take long to find a posting by the REAL
holder of the call sign at 5:30 this morning.

It must be someone very slick too. Looking at their headers an odd feature pops
up. Copy and pasted below, notice the "X-Complaints-To:
" field. I feel the field was edited because the poster
supposedly has giganews as their provider, but complaints aren't directed there
as they should. I checked "www.newsgroupbanter.com" out and it's a new domain
name that the page I got says was just registered, but has no further
information. Interesting. I think an email to giganews might be in order.

Can you, (or anyone else here) confirm that K9CPU is indeed alive and well? An
how was it confirmed? I ask before I submit an email report to Giganews
regarding this post. I looked K9CPU up in QRZ but there is no email address
listed unfortunately, so I can't contact him directly. A Yahoo search didn't
come up with anything helpful either. If this is a scam, it is obviously illegal
and needs to be reported, but if real, I don't want to add to a bad situation.

I couldn't make the determination. However, if you Google for the
email address, or search the various Google groups for the email
address, you'll find the identical message posted to at least 63
newsgroups and facebook pages:
https://www.google.com/search?q=hamk9cpu%40yahoo.com&num=50&filter=0&biw= 1309&bih=857
The call sign has also been used to create logins on various ham
related sites. For example:
http://www.4x4ham.com/showthread.php?3425-Welcome-K9CPU
I think that would be sufficient evidence that it's a scam.

Yes, he was alive when I looked. I checked his license, and found a
post by him on his company's blog about 5:30 that morning. And it was
not like his is a common name.

If you want to know for sure, get his info from the FCC database and

But it won't make any difference if you submit a report to giganews or

That parts not hard. There are several tools around which allow hackers
to easily change the headers to almost anything they want before sending
the message to a usenet server. And the usenet servers will add that
line only if it doesn't already exist.

No real skill necessary.

The QRZ lising for name Stuckle produces this only: AI0K JERRY D STUCKLE
BETHESDA MD and the email is a CompuServe one. Do they still exist?

The QRZ listing for K9CPU is Rimas M Buntinas of Chicago and none of the
named sale gear matches what he put down on QRZ for his station. A real ham
(a crooked one, at that) might've thought to look and at least list some
gear that matched the callsign.

And who was your husband? The current holder of K9CPU is alive and well.

A search of various obituary sites fails to reveal the recent death of
anybody named Jerry Stuckle.. The last Stuckle to pass was years ago -- at
least where I looked.

If you actually did die, Jerry, then Welcome Back!

This is very likely a scam. The worst part of it is that I suspect it is
being perpetrated by a ham radio operator.

I did notice that some of the wording was apparently not that of a native
English speaker, as is typical of overseas scammers. (I know -- it doesn't
account for immigrants who are English-as-a-second-language folks.)
Examples:

.... to purchase anyone of this rig. [any of these rigs] [any of his gear]

.... looking forward to hear from you [hearing]

I will appreciate serious buyer. [answer any serious buyers]

Yes Jerry, I suspect that none of this gear exists except for the text
above. This is very likely a scam. The worst part of it is that I suspect
it is being perpetrated by a ham radio operator.

"Sal"

That's me, but I don't know where they got the compuserve address.
AFAIK I never registered there.

Not that I worry about it.

K9CPU is the one that is supposed to be the silent key, NOT Jerry, but reading
the posts in this thread in their entirety would make this very clear. Jerry has
simply commented on the situation as well as trying to be helpful answering
questions from me. But again this should have been obvious.

You're absolutely correct. I'm not sure how I did it, but I mistakenly
thought the original poster (with the long list of gear) had identified
Jerry as the SK. That never happened but I made several posts while
operating under this wrong assumption.

Upon a careful re-reading, it was obvious. I am embarrassed.

We all have "off" days Sal. An excellent example is that I could have been less
snarky myself, but I guess we all have "one of those days" from time to time.

Thanks for the verification. As suspected Giganews will do nothing about it,
claiming it isn't one of their customers. That might be the case, but I suspect
the poster IS a Giganews subscriber none-the-less. Oh well, one can only try.
