Default radial question

i just added some surface mounted radials to a vertical antenna i made
and wondered if there is any wisdom to anchoring the far end from the
antenna with a 6 inch rod that has a good rf connection to the radial.
the final answer probably is try it and find out, but i thought someone
might point out ther error/wisdom of my thinking.

Larry, you must be joking!

A 6-inch rod at the end of each (truly) surface radial will have the effect
of increasing the length of each radial by 6 inches. Just by looking at
them, it can be judged the effect on performance will be absolutely
negligible.

At HF, adding 6-feet rods will have the effect of increasing the length of
the radials by about 6 feet. Again, the difference in performance will very
likely not be detectable.

It depends to some extent on how long are the radials before you start
adding the rods.

With true surface or very shallow buried radials you can forget about
resonant lengths.

To make a noticeable improvement you will have to double the number of
existing radials - and then only when the number of existing radials is
less than about a dozen.

If you like amusing yourself with simple numbers, to observe the behaviour
of sets of shallow-buried radials, download in a few seconds program
RADIALS2 from website below.
