you've no right to be using a 2 metre radio, if you don't know the
fundamentals of building a simple antenna.
seems amateur licences really do come from Macky, deeeee's these days.

Used to be, exams weren't made "public". The FCC would give you a hint as to
what "may" be asked, but not a list of questions with answers. I still have
a copy of one of their "study guides". A single sheet front and back
usually. Unless you knew electronics, you rarely passed. Then along came
some wizard who thought the tests should be dumbed down. Now you have the
books with all questions and answers. That sort of test taking does NOT
prepare someone for the field. Any idiot can remember a bunch of answers
after a couple hours of going through the book. It does NOT "teach"
anything. I know some "hams" who don't even know what the hell a fuse is
for. Imagine that!

It isn't the person's fault, their acquiring the license via the current
system is just the way it is. But, that should not preclude them from
picking up some books to "READ" about such things as antenna theory,
building basics, etc. Without looking at some books, they'll be forever
asking questions and not understanding. The Internet is a wonderful source
of help, but there is only so much you can do. You need "reference"
materials to get you going. READ BOOKS - THEN if you still have questions -
ask........... The questions asked, should be the fillers - not the main
content.
