"---tonoght (April 11, 2005) at 9pm EDT." Expect the PBS presentation to be excellent, as usual. For great information in clear, concise form, the "Lenkurt Demodulator" was almost unbeatable. The topic of its January 1968 edition was "Undersea Cable". This edition was also included in Lenkurt`s 2nd book of reprints. History and technical aspects are covered. First transatlantic cable between Britain and America was placed in 1858, lasted 20 days, carried 732 telegraph messages, and saved the British government 50,000 pounds it is said. It took sixteen and a half hours to pass a 99-word message from Queen Victoria to President Buchanan. The next cable was laid in 1866 and lasted. Best regards, Richard Harrison, KB5WZI |
