They subtract from the efficiency of the antenna, however. The military wants something that is broadbanded, easy to erect, and doesn't need a tuner. It doesn't matter that they will have to run a KW to this thing to get the results most hams get running 100 watts to simple dipoles. At one time, and they may still, the military had high power ATU's, that would load bed springs. But these were quite expensive as you might imagine.
