The receivers of that era would be useless in today's congested RF spectrum, as well. On the other hand if you can design and build a state of the art communications system without outside help, that is something to brag about. Hell, I'd be happy if a significant percentage of the late vintage extras, who have "proved their worth" at 20 WPM, could operate worth a damn.
