Actually, I wanted to build the amplitude discriminator filter
described in the April 195? edition of QST. With back to back
discriminators, it blocked the strong signals and let the weak
ones through. Larson E. Rapp certainly performed miracles with
unusual electronic designs back in those days.

One time the BFO oscillator cap failed in my Hallicrafters S53A.
Shorty (W5 Old Lonely Virgin) the local TV repairman, didn't
have anything that small so he showed me how to twist two wires
together until I got the right beat frequency.
