Except, of course, in the Dixie, where all compasses will point toward Cuba.

Yea, but the South of a magnet is based on the earth's south/north
relationship, so if earth's magnet field flips, the magnet label would also
flip to maintain uniformity since any reference is relative anyway: thus the
south will never rise again...

Besides the dip-gyrocompass is used for modern navigation and works off of
the center of the earth's rotation because the magnetic center is off. Thus
if earth's magnetic field reverses, there will be little if any effect on
"TRUE" north or south, GPS or navigation except for birds, insects and so
on. And they will adapt quickly too. Again, the south will never rise
again....

So there!!!!!!!

Are you saying the same force that causes the poles to flip will come to my
house and relabel my compass?

Remember, the thing near the Earth's north geo pole _already is_ a _South_
magnetic pole. So it already happened and nobody even noticed!

True. Magnets have 2 poles called north and south in reference to the
direction they seek on the earth. Like poles repel and unlike poles
attract.

Earth`s magnetic field produces an electron and ion flow which protects
Earth from the solar wind, turns aside charged cosmic rays, and causes
auroras. A magnetosphere turns with the rotation of the planet.

The earth`s magnetic poles don`t agree exactly with its geographic poles
on its axis of rotation. The magnetic poles slowly circle about the
geographic poles by about 0.04-degrees of longitude per year. About
every 100,000 years the Earth`s magnetic field reverses, interchanging
north and south magnetic poles.

So, if the earth keeps on turning as it always has, the magnetic
polarities will continue their reversals as throughout history when man
did not exist or was too primative to record such events.

One interesting point brought up was that Mars doesn't have a magnetic
field. The idea was that its core was too cool. Similarly, as Earth's core
cools, albeit slowly, its magnetic field will become weaker and weaker.

Call back in, say, a billion years or two, and maybe the long term
average will be down 3dB.

I do not believe Earth`s magnetic field "produces" any electrons or ions.
It deflects them coming from the sun because of the effect a magnetic field
has on electrical charges - the charges tend to move alonf the lines of
force and, therefore, the stuff gets routed to the poles or around the
planet.
I'm also not so sure that a magnetic field "turns" when the magnet
rotates about an axis through the poles. I think the lines going around one
of Earth's hemispheres (east-west speaking) are indestinguishable from those
of another hemisphere. Something in the field will not be dragged around
with the rotation of the planet.

every 100,000 years the Earth`s magnetic field reverses, interchanging
north and south magnetic poles.

The NOVA the other evening said it is something like 200 to 700 million
years, I believe. (May have the multiplier wrong, but the significant digit
is what they said)

The NOVA was not too clear about how a rotating molten conductor
creates a field, but once you get one, I can understand how the field and
current in the core can cross couple and keep each other going.

Off by three orders of magnitude. The average (100K-200K) is lower
than what has been observed (700K) since the last flip.

Hi Steve,

This is an example of how generators used to work (when the battery
was dead). The "residual" magnetism within the iron bulk presented
enough excitation for a formerly motionless coil to cause current to
be generated. That current was then used in the excitation coil to
build a field that in turn created more current for a larger
excitation field - and so on. The term in electronics is called
variously as "bootstrapping," "fly-back," "buck-boosting," or
"bucking."
