Different things are needed, depending on the material (first, do no harm).
Among the things I have found best for a particular "de-spooging" task a

o The dishwasher
o Soap and water and a brush
o Febreeze
o Sunlight and fresh air
o Lacquer thinner
o Denatured alcohol
o WD-40
o De-Oxit
o Break Free
o Pledge
o Linseed oil
o Glade
