Military Headphones info needed....

Hi All,
I found a box in the shack that I think has military headphones in it.
It is titled: 5965-160-1055 Headset, Elecrtical HS16A. Inside the box
is a foil envelope containing the headphones. The printing on the foil
envelope says Mil-B-131D class2 RAP Industries Inc. Columbus, GA.
August 1966.
Does anyone know what these are and what they might go with? Is there
any value to these? The foil envelope is sealed shut and I would like
to avoid opening it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
rgds,
Mark S.

HS-16As were used with any of several radios from late WWII (replaced
the HS-16s) to mid 60's as they were fairly universal: 520 Ohm dual
elements; (I.E. 1000 ohms if in series; 250 ohms in parallel); 54 inch
cord; phone tip connectors.

Besides radios - they were also specified for use on some military tube
testers (ones that have "noise" monitor jacks - like the TV-10).

Last few I saw through ebay (used but good condition) went for $5 - $10
bucks. Your's being sealed should bring more.

BTW you noted RAP industries - is that correct? early ones (at least the
HS-16s) were made by Murdock.

The same earphones are available new-in-box on e-bay from time to time. I
believe they can be obtained BUY-IT-NOW for about 20 to 30 dollars. Fair
Radio also had (perhaps still does) them for about the same price recently.

I bought a couple of the ersatz HS-16's. They purport to be DSA
surplus, but, and contrary to any DSA/DLSA/GSA contract requirement(s),
there are absolutely no source markings on the unit or the package.
There should be a "cage" code (manufacturer's code), valid contract
number (the number listed does not show up on any procurement archive)
and other required data. Also, note that the unit uses metric thread
machining. DSA/DLSA would have (did!) specify ASA machining, at that
time. It does get curiouser and curiouser, but who cares!! If the
toobies want to believe that the TV-7 "specifies" this headset.. that's
OK. If one want's to pay $90, that's OK, too. They are nice, imported
copies of the old HS-16... even if they do crush your skull... out of
the box!! HI!!
PS: Rap Industries are the folks that made the packing materials, not
the headsets.
