Default "better" AM radio antennas ?

What are you looking for? Do you want directionality or sensitivity?

It's hard to beat a long wire for sensitivity. It's hard to beat a loop
for directionality.

What is the 6-inch loop you are using now? A larger loop will tend to
buy you more sensitivity but it remains very directional as long as it's
smaller than a quarter-wave (which for AM is very large indeed), so you
still have to swing it around.
