Default Tiny L.A. station gets support from major musicians

Interesting article in the L.A. Times about KCSN, a small nonprofit
station (the callsign stands for "Cal State Northridge," not "Crosby,
Stills, and Nash" :-)) that is about to benefit from a concert by
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and auction donations from U2, Bob
Seger, Coldplay, Mick Jagger, etc.

KCSN has a free-form format anchored by people who are passionate
about different types of music. They're hoping to raise enough money
to increase their signal strength and reach more of the L.A. area.

Actually they're not exactly free form. They're what's termed in the trade
"Triple-A," or "adult album alternative," a format that's been tried in
various places on the commercial band without much success. The program
director, Sky Daniels, has extensive experience in commercial radio.

They used to have a student-staffed news department that won a lot of
awards. From time to time at industry events, I used to run into the
professor in charge of it. From the looks of the program schedule on their
web site, they've gotten rid of that. It seems like fewer and fewer
college-owned stations have any kind of student involvement, although the
one I advise is still student-managed.
