Default The Golden Age of Radio: An Unscientific Poll

If there are any Old Time Radio listeners in this group I would be
interested in your input. Using creativity, production, acting,
writing and your totally unobjective personal taste as the criteria,
rank your top ten old
time radio programs. Mine a

1. The Adventures of Harry Lime
2. Crime Classics
3. Mr. President
4. Suspense
5. Frontier Gentleman
6. The Whistler
7. Gunsmoke
8. I Was a Communist For the FBI
9. You Are There
10.Unit 99

Points will be awarded inversely e.g. 10 points for a #1 ranking, 9
points for #2, etc. Totals will be calculated weekly for one month or
however long interest in the topic remains.

Leader in the clubhouse:
The Adventures of Harry Lime: 10 points.

Incidentally a fantastic website devoted to Old Time Radio is
http://www.otrcat.com/index.php/ I have no stake in the site, just
feel they deserve a plug for their contribution to keeping the OTR
hobby alive and well. One could spend many evenings reading the well
written
synopses and histories of hundreds of OTR programs produced during
that wonderful era.

I am surprised that Dimension X / X Minus One does not get a place
in your top ten list.

In terms of production and acting quality, the NBC University Theater
of the Air should also be included.

I was afraid this would happen - the thread is about one's PERSONAL
favorites. It is not intended to be an arbitrary list that would
elicit "how can you possibly leave _______ out!" responses. I'm not
an expert on professional radio broadcasting standards, just an Old
Time Radio fan. So do you have a list of favorites or not?

Yes and Dimension X / X Minus One and NBC University Theater of the Air
are amongst my personal favorites otherwise I would not have mentioned
them.

Myself and I suspect the vast majority of the readers of this newsgroup
have insufficient motivation or time to draw up a definitive top ten list
accurately rated according to all the criteria which you have specified.

Lists of one's favorite top tens are entirely pointless anyways,
and the thing which is of interest and value to others, which you
appear to be intent on squashing, is meaningful discussion of why
shows should be on a top ten list.

So do you have a list of favorites or not?

I do but not in any definitive order which you are obviously not interested
in, nor why those shows would be on my list or anybody else's list.

Well, put my vote in for Dimension X as a personal favorite as well, but
then again I also always liked Johnny Dollar, which is kind of cheesy but
still great fun.

There is an old time radio newsgroup still, isn't there?

I have heard some of those, and yes you are right, cheesy but fun.
Another similar show to that is Richard Diamond, Private Detective.

I didn't like Richard Diamond quite as much. But there is a huge universe
of stuff out there which is more or less forgotten today and I think that is
a shame.

Hmm... I don't see any posts at all in there. I gather from the limited
headers that you posted there that it's junk coming from Google Groups.
You may want to talk to your usenet admin about dumping all posts from
Google Groups... an increasing number of people are doing that and it pretty
much eliminates all the spam. Google's usenet service seems to be run
unattended.

Well that show does not quite have the gimmick of the Dollar
show with the expenses tagline, so as you no doubt concur, is
more just a run of the mill detective show probably to compete
with the other higher profile detective characters.

But there is a huge universe of stuff out there which is more

A few of the shows (just like some of the junk produced today)
would be best forgotten

I have recently discovered that you can download for free quite
a number of the OTR shows at the Internet Archive site

http://www.archive.ORG

This recent discussion also brought back to mind a radio drama
series which I only heard one or two episodes of from 1984 or
so that was broadcast on public radio stations. After a web
search I found the title "Moon Over Morocco" and the company
that produced it, ZBZ. Visiting their web site I discovered
that it is possible to buy the series on CD, but they are
charging the exorbitant price of USD 50 for the single CD.

Other CDs on their site of other radio shows which they produced
are in the USD 20 price range, which although high by todays
prices for CDs is rather more reasonable for such specialist
material.

But USD 50 for a single CD???

How does ZBS get it to fit on one CD? It's nearly ten hours long.
I think the version we had at WREK came on twenty LPs.

I seriously doubt they managed to get the whole thing onto a single CD.
How much is Fourth Tower of Inverness? That one was also a whole stack
of LPs and I had to dub the intro cuts on every single one of them to cart.

Oops red face

I only looked at the overview page which just had (CD) under the image
and the price of USD 50.

Going to the page with all the details, it is 8 *audio* CDs, so in fact
it works out to USD 6.125 per CD which is of course very reasonable.

If I got the impression that it was one CD, I would suggest that a few
other people may as well, if they just skim the page.

Yes I know, I should have checked the actual details, but when it is
late and one is just doing a cursory investigation ...

I seriously doubt they managed to get the whole thing onto a single CD.

Well they could do if it was a data CD with MP3 files. In fact they do
also offer those (320 kbps) for USD 45 which you would admit is effectively
more expensive per bit.

How much is Fourth Tower of Inverness?

6 audio CDs for USD 45.00

If you want to have a look at what it is on offer --

http://www.zbs.org/catalog/

Now that I realize that the prices are for multi-CD sets,
the prices are not too bad.
