Pine Tree Broadcasting has flipped recent acquisition 1400 WWNZ
Veazie/Bangor ME to Classic Country The Country Road. The station had
previously been operating a News/Talk format to complement sister News/Talk
1340 WVZS. It is the second flip at the cluster since taking over following
Oldies 1230 WGUY/94.1 W231CH becoming a simulcast of Soft AC 93.7 The Wave
WRMO Milbridge. GM Paul Dupuis described the new station to Fox Bangor as
playing the greatest hits from the decades back, from Waylon and Willie,
Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette, the early Reba McIntyre and George Strait
collection.

April 1996: Las Vegas Sees Multiple Flips

Posted: 29 Apr 2016 08:30 AM PDT
https://radioinsight.com/blog/blogs/...ultiple-flips/

We continue our month by month recap of the deals and changes that shaped
radio in 1996. Acquisitions Sinclair Broadcasting, then and now a mostly
Television based operation, made the big splash of the month with the
acquisition of River City Broadcasting for $1.2 billion. The deal added 10
TV stations and 34 radio stations to Sinclairs holdings including clusters
in Albuquerque, Buffalo, Greenville, Memphis, Nashville, New Orleans, St.
Louis and Wilkes-Barre plus 1580 KBLA Los Angeles. Evergreen Media
purchased Rhythmic CHR Wild 107.7 KYLD San Francisco from Crescent
Communications for $44 million to pair with Hot AC K101 KIOI and Urban
106.1 KMEL. OmniAmerica swapped Rock 100.7 WMMS and Oldies 105.7 WMJI
Cleveland to Nationwide Communications for Hot AC Mix 105.1 WOMX Orlando
and $43.5 million. Nationwide paired its two new Cleveland FMs with Country
99.5 WGAR, while WOMX paired with CHR XL106.7 WWXL in Orlando. OmniAmerica
then sold Sports 1420 WHK Cleveland to Salem for $6.5 million. American
Radio Systems continued its rapid growth on the west coast. First it paid
$8 million for Rhythmic CHR 94.1 Jamz KJMZ and from Parker Communications
and AC 100.5 KMZQ, Classic Rock 107.5 KFBI and Sports 840 KVEG from
Crescent Communications for $30 million. ARS had previously purchased CHR
98.5 KLUC and Travel 1140 KXNO from Nationwide. As seen below, ARS would
act quickly on its LMA to reshape its Las Vegas cluster. ARS also purchased
Rock 92.3 KSJO and Classic Rock 94.5 KUFX in the San Jose market and
Country 98.5 KUPL and Smooth Jazz 106.7 KKJZ in the Portland market from
BayCom Partners for $103 million and Sports 1380 KMJI and Rhythmic CHR
102.5 KSFM in Sacramento from Secret Communications for an undisclosed
amount. EZ Communications acquired Sports 590 KFNS and AC 102.5 KEZK St.
Louis from Par Broadcasting for $48 million. Multi-Market Communications
purchased Precision Media Corp. CHR 95.7 WKSS Hartford for $18 million to
join its acquisition of Liberty Broadcastings 1410 WPOP, 104.1 WMRQ, and
105.9 WHCN. Multi-Market head Robert Sillerman then merged the company into
his co-owned SFX Broadcasting bringing 77 stations under SFXs control. One
way to create a mega-cluster was a straight merger. Point Communications
paired their 1310 WIBA, 92.1 WMAD, and 101.5 WIBA-FM in Madison WI with
Midcontinent Broadcastings 1070 WTSO, 96.3 WMLI, and 104.1 WZEE. Barnstable
Broadcasting began LMAing Islandwide Broadcastings Long Island NY cluster
in preparation of an eventual purchase. Barnstable added Country 740 WGSM,
AC 98.3 WKJY, and Rock simulcast 94.3 WMJC/103.9 WRCN. Evergreen Media
broke up its Buffalo NY holdings as it sold Oldies 1120 WHTT/104.1 WHTT-FM
to Mercury Radio for $19.5 million and Smooth Jazz 92.9 WSJZ to American
Radio Systems for $12.5 million. In addition to their sales in San
Francisco and Las Vegas, Crescent Communications sold their
Albuquerque/Santa Fe holdings to Citadel Broadcasting. Sports 1450 KRZY,
Country 92.3 KRST and Country 105.9 KRZY-FM joined Citadels seven other
holdings in the market at that time for $23 million. Format Changes The
biggest changes in April came in Las Vegas as American Radio Systems began
consolidating its newly expanded cluster. Rhythmic CHR 94.1 Jamz KJMZ was
flipped to Hot AC Mix 94.1 KMXB to take it out of direct competition with
new sister 98.5 KLUC. Classic Rock 107.5 KFBI flipped to Alternative X107.5
KXTE while Howard Stern remained in mornings. The new structure gave ARS a
wall of women with KLUC targeting 12-24, KMXB 25-44, and AC Lite 100.5 KMZQ
35-54. Sheridan and Chancellor closed on their frequency swap in Pittsburgh
moving Alternative WXDX from 106.7 to the stronger 105.9, while Urban WAMO
Hot 106 WAMO-FM made the reverse move. Capitol Broadcastings newly acquired
Country Young Country 96.1 WMYC Mobile AL flipped to Classic Rock 96.1 The
Rocket WRKH after it and sister Country 94.9 WKSJ became sisters to
Capitols existing 104.1 WDWG. Cumulus flipped Alternative Live 101.9 WHHY
Montgomery AL to Country Cat Country 102. Hawes-Saunders Broadcasting
flipped AC 96.9 WTRJ Dayton OH to Urban Oldies WRNB utilizing ABC Radio
Networks Solid Gold Soul network. Rock 104.1 KHOP Modesto CA merged with
95.1 KDJK on the 95.1 signal with the KHOP call letters. After a week of
stunting with nonstop Elvis, 104.1 became Classic Hits Arrow 104.1 KROW. It
would rebrand again in August as 104.1 The Hawk KHKK. Special thanks to
David Gleasons AmericanRadioHistory.com, whose archive of radio industry
publications and documents makes this historical look back possible.

WEEI Extends Boston Red Sox Rights Through 2023

Posted: 28 Apr 2016 01:42 PM PDT
https://radioinsight.com/blog/headli...-through-2023/

Entercom Sports 93.7 WEEI-FM Lawrence/Boston has extended its deal to
remain the flagship station for Boston Red Sox baseball through the 2023
season. WEEI has held the rights to the Red Sox since 1995 with the games
airing on 850 WEEI until the primary local Sports format moved to 93.7.
From 2007 through 2009 most games aired on sister Talk 680 WRKO with WEEI
carrying the rest. While no terms were disclosed, The Boston Globe reported
earlier this month that the two sides were discussing a deal between $15
million-$17 million per year. That would be a reduction from the $20
million per year Entercom had been paying on the 10 year deal that expires
at the end of this season. That deal was signed amidst reports that the Red
Sox were looking to move to Greater Medias 92.9 WBOS and take an ownership
stake in the station. Delighted to announce the extension of @WEEIs @RedSox
broadcasts through 2023. A true privilege to be partnered w/ this world
class team. David Field (@DavidFieldETM) April 28, 2016 Today, Entercom
announced that the long-standing broadcast partnership between WEEI and the
Boston Red Sox will continue through the 2023 Major League Baseball season.
The announcement extends a play-by-play relationship with one of the most
fervently loyal fan bases in pro sports. Red Sox broadcasts have been heard
on WEEI since 1995. Entercom CEO, David Field, praised the new deal as a
win for both organizations and Red Sox fans everywhere. “WEEI and Entercom
are delighted to be extending our outstanding relationship with the Boston
Red Sox well into the future. It is a true privilege to be partnered with
this extraordinary, iconic organization and their world-class team of
professionals, both on and off the field,” Field commented. Field went on
to say, “Red Sox fans across the country will continue to hear outstanding
Sox play-by-play broadcasts and 24/7 team coverage on WEEI and WEEI.com,
the home of Red Sox baseball.” “We are pleased to extend our partnership
with WEEI for another seven seasons,” said Red Sox President, Sam Kennedy.
“For more than a decade, the broadcast has been part of our most historic
moments with the voice of Joe Castiglione echoing the triumph that we all
felt during three championship seasons. We look forward to this new phase
of our partnership and sharing more winning baseball through the airwaves
with our fans across New England.” The WEEI Shaw’s Red Sox Radio Network is
presently heard throughout New England on 55 AM and FM radio affiliates.
Red Sox Hall of Fame announcer, Joe Castiglione, is celebrating his 33rd
year in the booth and is the lead voice on broadcasts. He is joined this
season by New England native and former Pittsburgh Pirates voice, Tim
Neverett.

Mile High Sports Returns To FM

Posted: 28 Apr 2016 01:22 PM PDT
https://radioinsight.com/blog/headli...returns-to-fm/

After bouncing around from 1510/93.7 to 1550/94.1 to 1340 over the past few
years, Brokered Sports Mile High Sports KDCO Denver has once again paired
itself with an FM translator. Mountain Community Translators has used the
250 mile AM translator waiver to bring 107.1 K296GQ Kimball CO into Denver
as 104.7 K284CI. Operating with 140w/231m, the new signal brings 1340 KDCO
to FM on the western side of the market. Mile High Sports Radio (KDCO AM
1340) announced Thursday that it is now simulcasting on 104.7 FM in the
Denver-area suburbs. The move makes Mile High Sports Radio the only
all-sports format in Denver broadcasting on both AM and FM. (Other AM
stations are available only on HD2 signals.) “We are very excited to again
offer our fans multiple over-the-air broadcast options to listen to
Denver’s largest sports talk lineup thanks to the addition of FM 104.7,”
said general manager Casey Light. “Between AM 1340, FM 104.7, our live
stream and iPhone and Android apps, there is now a full handful of ways our
audience can hear unbiased, independent sports talk about their favorite
Denver teams.” Mile High Sports AM 1340 and FM 104.7 remains Denver’s only
independently owned and operated local sports station. More than 25 locally
based hosts comprise a lineup that airs more than 80 hours of live local
programming each week. More than half the lineup are Denver or Colorado
natives. Mile High Sports Radio, which began broadcasting in 2007, will
enter its 10th year on air in July, coinciding with the start of Denver
Broncos training camp. The launch of the new FM signal coincides with the
first day of the 2016 NFL Draft.
